The Serve Safe test is a certification process that trains students to be responsible and get their certified food handlers license.
According to Normal West Family and Consumer Sciences teacher, Ms. Nina Fabrizius, the curriculum is set within the safety and sanitation unit of the Culinary 1 class.
During this unit, students study culinary standards, including Proper hand washing techniques.
Time and temperature control, specifically the “danger zone” where bacteria grow fastest.
Safety requirements for clothing and jewelry in a kitchen.
To take the exam you have to be in at least culinary 1 and it costs $10 per student.
The test is offered once each semester and Fabrizius stated that last semester, “approximately 40 students chose to take the exam with nearly all of them passing.”
“After High School, the culinary program at BCA is kind of one of those things that are checked off on a

list of requirements that they would have,” Fabrizius stated.
With a safe certificate, “whether they are going to college or just right into the workforce, it’s a good thing to have that to kind of help them get a job or just enter into the workforce.”
So it’s beneficial for them that way they have another skill that they can take with them outside of high
school with Fabrizius stating, “they can get part-time jobs if they want to go into the food industry after High school.”
Or wanted you the culinary program at BCA is kind of one of those things that are checked off on a list of requirements that they that they would have
“Yes, 110% yes specially if they want a part-time job at some point.”
Fabrizius is highly enthusiastic and excited for students to get their ServSafe certificate.
“We highly encourage you to take the Serve Safe certification test,” Fabrizius stated. “We encourage you to take a culinary one if it is the only culinary class you take.”
