Normal West staff share their summer plans
PEGGY MODGLIN

Mrs. Modglin’s favorite things to do in the summer include taking trips, biking, being in the pool, and playing golf while spending time with family and friends.

To recharge in the summer, she says she steps away from teaching and moves into outdoor activities, but sometimes still prepares work for the next school year.

Some big vacations she plans on going on include Arizona, the Ozarks, Michigan, and West Palm Beach, Florida.

Her favorite way to relax is by being outside doing anything and reading a lot.

NICOLE SABUCO

Ms. Sabuco’s favorite summer activities include walking her dogs and just being outside.

She also spends her time working at summer school, as well as being a reader/grader for the AP language exam.

She says her favorite job is hanging out with her elderly friend Mary, who needs a little extra help.

She also volunteers at the Humane Society of Central Illinois walking dogs, and she likes to describe it as “pretty much the best thing ever.”

To prepare for the upcoming school year she says, “This will be a shock to no one, but I am completely set up, planned, copied, and ready to go by the end of July. This year will be a little different since my classroom cannot be set up until later due to the ‘great move.’”

Outside of her busy schedule, she likes to relax by reading a lot, taking lots of naps, and hanging out with friends, family, and dogs.

A vacation she plans on is visiting her daughter in Orlando.

“She works at Disney World and just moved into her first big girl apartment. I am anxious to see her and help her with anything she needs for her new place,” Sabuco said.

Her favorite ways to relax are walking, reading, napping, or hanging out with people.

Lastly, her goal is to get through a couple of books a week to catch up on her “to-be-read-pile.”

Her movie/show goals also include catching up on Euphoria, and having seen the Micheal Jackson movie by the time summer rolls around.

ABBI STRADER

For her summertime activity, Ms. Strader says, “I work really hard on my tan.”

She describes herself as “solar-powered, so summer in the sun brings me so much joy.”

She also loves to read and her goal each year is to read the number of books based on her age.

So, in the summertime, she takes reading very seriously.

HALEIGHT MARRIOTT

Mrs. Marriott has an eight-year-old daughter, so she gets to spend a lot of time with her.

They love going to the library and the pool most days, but have also gotten into more outdoorsy adventures like hiking.

She mentioned that they love walking the Shady Pine trail out by Evergreen Lake.

She also has a second job working private home health on weekends, and wants to pick up more of that this summer.

For her, spending quality time with family is incredibly important, and she likes to recharge by playing lots of card games, especially Uno: No Mercy.

This summer, they are taking a trip to Louisiana to see Mrs. Marriott’s family, which they only see about once a year.

Her favorite way to relax is with her daughter, doing what they like to call “planting.”

She described it as “really any time spent just relaxing outside. We tend to sit on the back porch or in the backyard in the sunshine.”

Lastly, her current reading goal is to read one book a month, and is starting to read more books by Freida McFadden. She is currently reading Do You Remember?

JENNIFER RENCHEN

Over the summer, Mrs. Renchen enjoys reading, writing, and hanging out with her husband and children.

Some of her summer favorites also include baking and crocheting.

Mrs. Renchen likes to recharge by stocking up on books to read, and she says “I read a lot of fluffy books. Fun stuff with VERY little substance. I find it always helps me remember that while reading is about stretching oneself and learning and struggling, it can also be about pure entertainment. Both kinds of reading are necessary!”

Mrs. Renchen does not have a second job other than tending to her children.

To prepare for the next school year, Mrs. Renchen likes to plan ahead. She spends her time reading new material, looking over previous texts, and participating in taskforce work.

She begins preparing for the first weeks of August during the last few days of school to help keep her on track and lessen her workload.

Mrs. Renchen plans to take a trip to St. Louis with her family. “We’re not going far this summer, but we are going to spend a few days in St. Louis, and my son is extremely excited to attend his first major league baseball game!” Mrs. Renchen said.

Mrs. Renchens’ favorite way to relax is spending quality time with her sister in the shade at the pool while both of their children take swim lessons.

Mrs. Renchen plans to read plenty of books over the summer and is open to suggestions.

KIMBERLY BOEHM
KIMBERLY BOEHM

Mrs. Boehm loves to spend her time outside in the garden, where she plants vegetables, herbs, and flowers in her yard.

Over the summer, Mrs. Boehm works for major events at Soldier Field.

She says, “In 2022, I started working major events at Soldier Field, and they’ve kept me on staff since! I’m looking forward to concerts this summer (like Bruno Mars and Ed Sheeran), a USA vs. Germany soccer game, and preparing for the Bears season!

To prepare for the next year, she and Mrs. Siebenthal (Normal Community Orchestra Director) meet between June and July to discuss potential Hauntcert themes and music.

She also plans fundraisers, depending on whether the orchestra will be traveling. Mrs. Boehm recharges by taking the opportunity to sit down and read and visit friends. Mrs. Boehm mentions her love for travelling.

This year, her bigger trips include attending a Mediterranean cruise in June and a Mexican Cruise in July.

Her shortest trip will be to the Chicagoland Suburbs to visit her family. Mrs. Boehm’s favorite way to relax is to deep clean and rearrange things in her house.

This summer, Mrs Boehm has several books set aside to read, including Born to Run by Christopher McDougall, Worth Fighting For by Jesse Q. Sutanto, Booker Lovers by Emily Henry, and possibly The Fellowship of the Ring by Tolkien.

JOHN BIERBAUM

Dr. Bierbaum enjoys grilling and catching up on some summer reading.

Each summer, he looks forward to getting outside and working for his brother’s business.

Dr. Bierbaum also runs a hedge-trimming crew that works the entire summer.

“It is a really great balance to my intense school involvement. I kind of go off the grid for a couple of months,” he stated.

To occupy his time, Dr. Bierbaum teaches at Brown University each summer for two weeks at a pre-college program, which he has been doing for the past 10+ years.

Dr. Bierbaum hardly gets away from his classroom and makes sure to be intentional with his time to prepare.

For vacation, Dr. Bierbaum prefers to travel short distances because of his son’s hockey schedule.

Although he doesn’t watch television, he looks forward to catching up on newly released movies.
