The Associate’s degree program is organizing Computer Science Week starting December 8th through the 12th.
“It’s a national event that lots of different groups are involved in, like girls who code, code.org, and it’s just a week to raise awareness about computer science.” Computer Science teacher Mr. Weber stated.
Normal West will celebrate through a competition with computer-science-based puzzles. There will be multiple levels–easy through hard.
The main goal for this week is to build interest not only in computer science but also in future careers.
“[The week is meant] to hopefully create interest and help students see value and why computer science might be relevant to their future careers,” Weber said.
Not all students in the program take the class for a future career, but rather to gain background knowledge that could potentially lead to the development of additional skills.
“I believe that by the time you all are in your careers for the rest of your lives, most of them are going to involve computers and technology in some way,” Weber said, “And so I think having a background and some skills in that will benefit the students here.”
The puzzle challenges will be released at the following times:
- Potluck (easy) – 12 am on Monday, 12/8 (opening) – 12 am on Tuesday, 12/9 (closing)
- Sledding Science (medium) – 12 am on Wednesday, 12/10 (opening) – 12 am on Thursday, 12/11 (closing)
- Fun Snowball Fight (hard) – 12 am on Friday, 12/12 (opening) – 12 am on Saturday, 12/13 (closing)
