New student initiative arranges luncheon with state representative [a news brief]

The Democracy Project is a new student initiative that West social studies teacher John Bierbaum has helped to organize. As one of the first events for the group, they organized a ‘leadership luncheon’ with State Representative, Sharon Chung on Wednesday, November 5.

On November 5, State Representative Sharon Chung visited Normal West High School for a “leadership luncheon” to talk with students representing different clubs in the school such as S.E.A.T, Black Student Union, Asian American Heritage Club, Pride Club, and the Democracy Project.

The Democracy Project is a new initiative at Normal West created to educate eligible students about their voting opportunities, and how to engage civically in the community.

This group of students will become resources for the student body about all things voting.

They will provide information for students on how to become election judges, how to register to vote, and more.

The group also helped organize this week’s luncheon with Representative Chung with social studies teacher Dr. John Bierbaum.

Head coach Dr. John Bierbaum and assistant coach, Mr. Bob White helped get the team prepared for the big event, and the team ended with a 16th ranked finish in the nation.

The Normal West Theater Department is sponsoring a 24-hour show this coming weekend. Those involved will put together a full show in 24-hours. Tickets to the final show can be purchased at the door for $4.

IMC Specialist, Tera Hafermann and English teacher, Amy Reiman worked together to write a News Literacy Project grant called The News Literacy Project’s District Fellowship. Through this grant, Unit 5 will receive $30,000 over three years along with assistance from experts and resources provided by NLP.
