The Paw Print staff recently competed in the IHSA Sectional Competition on Saturday, April 5.
This is West’s second year competing in the sectional competition. They have never had anyone qualify for the state competition.
Five students competed in five different categories, with the goal of qualifying for the state competition. The top three students in each category are eligible to compete at the state competition at the end of the month.
Senior Contributing Writer, Hunter Reid led the way as he competed in the Sports Writing category.
Reid placed first, officially qualifying him for the state competition as a sectional champion.
He is Normal West’s first sectional champion in any category of IHSA Journalism.
Other competitors include Junior Editor Raya Radoslavova, who competed in the Copy Editing category; Contributing Writer Owen Voorheis, who competed in the Headline category; Junior Editor-in-Chief, Mackenzie Boyer, who competed in the News Writing category; and Junior Jo Brown, who competed in the Review Writing category.
Both Radoslavova and Voorheis placed second in their respective categories, and Boyer placed third. They will each compete at the state competition, alongside Reid.
All four students will compete in the state competition in their respective categories on Friday, April 25 at Heartland Community College.
