That’s how long it had been since Bloomington Normal Lacrosse had won a game.
The losing streak finally came to an end on Saturday, March 29th as the Purple Iron Cats took down rival school Dunlap 8-7 in an overtime thriller at Tucci Stadium at Illinois Wesleyan University.
BN lacrosse head coach, Jackson Ficsher, picked up his first career win at the helm.
“It means a lot; he’s a great coach and he’s far overdue. We hope to get more wins in the future,” junior Thomas Eganhouse stated.
“The team was extremely happy. with the season last year, we have a group of freshmen and some sophomores, some guys where it’s their second year playing lacrosse where that’s their first win,” Fischer added.
“I mean, everyone’s putting in a lot of work to make that happen. and you could coach all day long, but it doesn’t matter unless the players put in the work. And these guys have worked their freaking tails off to get to the point where we can pull off a win like that,” Fischer continued.
Eganhouse was the difference-maker putting in the game-tying and game-winning goals.
“I didn’t think the ball would come my way but it did, and it was mostly instinct from there. It was mostly instinct from there,” Eganhouse explained.
With the win being the program’s first in over a year, the team hopes it helps change the culture and that there is more success in store.
“It’s not something that just happens overnight. It’s something that happens and once you find out how to win. You found a way to fight in those close games last Saturday,” Fischer added.
“It just turns into habit and there’s no explanation as to making that winning coach or being a winning team. You just know how to win. So we took the first step in the right direction to learn how to win, learn how to fight and momentum through practice this week has carried forward.”
“We have momentum that we didn’t have last year so we’re going to take this win and build off it. 1% better everyday is our team motto and that’s how we’re going to grow this team,” Eganhouse stated.
The Iron Cats will look to snowball this momentum into a two-in-a-row win as they travel to Oak Forest to face off against the 5-0 Oak Forrest Bengals on Saturday, April 5 at 10 a.m.
