The 2023-2024 Wildcat Boys Wrestling team has officially begun their season. They’re looking to fill the big shoes of thirteen seniors who graduated last year!

After graduating thirteen seniors out of the program last year, a new group of Wildcats are looking to make this year their best yet.

First year head coach, Dave Lehr, shared techniques this year’s team is using to not only become stronger athletes, but more importantly, become a stronger team as a whole.

“One thing we’re really working towards this year is culture. They hang out, lift, together, and we even started doing team dinners.” Lehr said.

Aside from focusing on creating a “family-like culture”, there are a few individuals who Lehr has high expectations for this year. One of these individuals is Evan Willock, senior. Willock placed in the top six in the IHSA State Tournament last year and earned All-State recognition. While Willock is a talented athlete, he is also taking on a big leadership role on the team this year.

“I’d like to teach new wrestlers to be disciplined and maintain a strong mindset. Wrestling is a tough sport especially when you are trying to maintain a certain body weight. So you must stay disciplined in order to see improvements as a team and as an athlete.” Willock states.

Senior Matt Hanold emphasizes the importance of a strong mindset. “Something I like to teach younger wrestlers is mental toughness and preaching how it’s never good to give up.” Hanold said.

Despite the fact the Normal West boys Wrestling team lost thirteen valuable players last year, the Wildcats are looking forward to an excellent season led by seniors Evan Willock and Matt Hanold.

The team heads to Peoria on Wednesday, Nov. 29.
