Coming off of many open gym practices, the Normal West Softball team is preparing for their season.
During their practices, they are reminded of their beloved coach, April Schermann who left Normal West at the end of last school year.
Coach Shawn Kobel has taken the head coach position of Coach Schermann this season.
“Coach Kobel has the same mindset as Schrem when it comes to softball,” says senior player Erika Durham.
Durham has been playing softball for 12 years, and senior Kate McGowan has been playing for 11 years.
Both girls are excited for the upcoming season and getting to know their teammates.
“I am very excited for the new season because I think we are going to have a lot of fun this year, and we will all continue to learn and grow,” McGowan explains.
The team’s 22 season coach, Coach Schermann, is missed by these seniors.
“I was definitely sad when we first heard that Coach Scherm was leaving because she has been such an important part of the program,” says McGowan.
Naturally, Schermann misses the team as well.
“I miss the daily interactions – practices, conversations in the dugout and watching players grow from year to year. I miss the energy of competition and the bond that forms when a group works toward a common goal,” shares Schermann.
Schermann thinks back fondly of her team-bonding memories.
“Our spring break trips were special – especially Disney, Universal, Gulf Shores, and Nashville. Those trips, along with all the escape games we played together, helped build bonds that made us stronger once we got back on the field,” says Schermann.
“One of the top moments in West Softball history was making it to the state championship game. To see the entire school and community come together to cheer us on was something I’ll never forget,” adds Schermann.
Schermann left the girls with a growth mindset and her famous mantra “Control What You Can Control” also known as “CWYCC”.
“I wanted them to know that the lessons they learned through softball – discipline, toughness, teamwork, and perseverance – would serve them far beyond the field,” notes Schermann.
Starting fresh with Coach Kobel has been exciting for the team.
“I am excited to play under Coach Kobel this year. I have been coached by him in the past, and I’m excited to see how this season goes with him,” says McGowan.
“I hope the team continues to compete with confidence, play for one another, and uphold the standards of the program. Wins are always great, but I hope they measure success by growth, effort and unity,” says Schermann.
“I want them to enjoy the journey, trust the process, and walk away knowing they gave everything they had – to the game and to each other.”
The players’ mindset reflects Schermann’s hope.
“I feel our team is really competitive, and I’m excited to get to see my teammates and I continue to grow,” notes Durham.
Over spring break, the softball team heads to Tennessee for spring break and various tournaments. The girls look forward to competing against their rival Normal Community at some point in the season.
