Normal West boys swimming has five conference championships: ’11 ’13 ’14 ’19, and ’20.
And last week, the boys added another accolade to an incredible season, winning their 6th conference championship in dominant fashion.
This team has strong hopes for the postseason led by swimmers Joshua Sunkel, Cooper Franz and Skylar Maere.
Next up for the Wildcats is their Sectional this weekend, February 22.
For Maere, a senior, this year means everything to him.
“I’ve learned that swimming is a team sport not just an individual sport. Everyone has a role to play in every meet, which helps build the team atmosphere for everyone to do their best,” Maere stated.
Maere swims in the 50 free and 100 fly.
“It’s a mix between confidence and nervousness. I’ve been under the weather, so swimming isn’t the best right now.
But, I’m confident in my abilities to show out when it matters. The preparation is in the bank, so now it’s time to cash my check,” Maere added.
The sectional is competitive with opponents the Wildcats have faced previously, including Normal Community, Normal University, Bloomington, Central Catholic as well as teams from around the area including the Metamora Redbirds.
Young swimmers like sophomore Cooper Franz have helped the Wildcats be successful in the pool.
“I’m pretty confident, and I think our team is in a good position. I’m really excited for our relays,” Franz commented.
The senior leadership has been inspiring for Franz and has left him with important lessons.
“They’ve taught me be consistent in everything from cool downs to warm up just being consistent. It’ll benefit myself as an individual,” Franz added.
The team is excited to head into Sectionals knowing that success is probable for these fast Cats.
Sectionals will be on Saturday, February 22nd at the Normal Community pool.
