Although the squad has had some rough patches this season, the Normal West Varsity softball team hopes to right the ship with a lot of season left!

Normal West’s Softball season is off to a rough start, but they’ve officially busted out of a slump with a 11-5 win against Mattoon on Tuesday, April 9.

After starting 2-1 to start the season, the Lady Cats struggled on their spring break trip against some tough teams and lost four in a row, including a tough lost against a good U-High team.

During the U-High game, West had only one hit for the entire game, which didn’t help them get going, especially when they had more errors than hits with 2 for the game. Normal West’s offense has been pretty good this season, with 5 batters having at least 4 RBIs and having a batting average of at least .300, but it wasn’t enough today, to beat the Pioneers.

U-High jumped on West with 2 runs over the 2nd and 3rd inning, making the game not in Normal West’s favor.

Normal West’s Starting Pitcher Kenzie Fasig now had 5 strikeouts in 6 innings pitched, but the runs she gave up in the 2nd and 3rd inning lead them to a record of 2-8 as the starter this season.

However, after the tough U-High loss, West bounced back with a big win against Mattoon High School. Kenzie Fasig (3-6), was the winning pitcher with 7 innings pitched, 5 runs, 4 errors, and 2 strikeouts.

Senior Heartland Community College recruit, Natalie Nenne and Senior Olivia Kobel both went 3-5 with a double and 2 RBIs each.

Senior Abby Horeis was perfect, going 2-2 with 3 RBIs, and Freshmen Eden Hafermann, Sophomore, Avery White, and Senior Jossie Rood all went 2-4 in the game, as well.

Senior College of Holy Cross recruit, Emily McCandless also had a double and 2 RBIs in the win.

West has a chance to begin a winning streak as they continue the season at Richwoods tonight at Richwoods High School at 4:30pm. Go cheer on and support your team!
