Normal West senior Kiarra King was among 400 nationwide for the 2025 “Amazon Future Engineer” scholarship and internship.
Along with the $40,000 reward, King will spend the summer as an intern in Seattle, Washington for Amazon.
“ It’s very hard to get internships, specifically in computer science. So it means a lot that I’m going to have a nice community in Seattle,” King added.
The highly competitive scholarship is not easy to win.
Along with the basic application, there is also a coding challenge King had to complete.
West teachers, Ms. April Schermann and Mr. Dave Weber helped King through the application process.
Schermann, the advisor of Girls Who Code at West, provided a letter of recommendation as well as an evaluation of King as a student.
“Amazon is such a growing business in the tech field, and I’m really proud of Kiara and how much growth she has shown,” Schermann said.
