Getting garbage in the season of giving

The holiday season is upon us and although it is the season of giving, people sure do enjoy getting! However, when someone receives a gift they’re not a fan of, they may wish they weren’t getting.

Junior, Britta Warren, said she received a can of beans and a box of Froot Loops from a friend last year, “I could tell that this Christmas gift was not well thought out. They tried to play it off like it was an inside joke but, truthfully I think they just grabbed the first thing he found in his pantry.”

Sean Cavanaugh (11), said the worst gift he ever received for Christmas was, “…bacon flavored chapstick from my sister.”

It’s easier to be displeased with a gift you know someone didn’t give much thought to or picked out as a gag gift. However, when someone purchases something with full heart, it can put someone in an awkward position.

“My grandma bought me a stuffed animal penguin with a matching sweater for both the penguin and me. I was 12 so I suppose this wouldn’t have been that bad of a gift however, she made me wear it to dinner in a public place along with the stuffed animal. I was humiliated,” said Spencer Pontius (10).

Morgan Taylor (11) chuckled while saying, “Thankfully now my aunt just gives me gift cards from Christmas but a few years ago she thought it was a good idea to get my brother and I crocheting kits. I had absolutely no use for that thing.”

Everyone wants something and though it’s selfish, it can be disheartening when you don’t receive that gift. It can be even worse for the person who believes they have found the token gift and innocently bought the wrong thing.

“My mom wanted to get me what I has always wanted which in first grade was a Michael Jordan  jersey. When it came Christmas morning she was looking at me with the camera out and a smile all across her face. I unwrapped the box to find a Michael Jackson shirt. Yea, that was an awkward family video,” said sophomore, Tyler Wilcox.
