The 2023-2024 Model United Nations season has officially started.
Delegates from NCWHS went to a summit hosted by the Illinois State Model UN on Saturday, October 28th. In preparation for the summit, delegates of Model UN spent weeks learning about their representative country.
“Model United Nations is a simulation activity based on the actual workings of the United Nations, which is an international form to try to come to resolutions from a myriad of conflicts around the world to find real world solutions” John Bierbaum, Model UN sponsor, states.
During the summit, members spent time interacting with delegates from other schools to solve a global issue. The issues at hand during this summit was Small Arm Control and Environmental Policy. Delegates from schools around the Bloomington-Normal area were split into two groups, each to find solutions to their assigned problems.
A summit this large required lots of planning and preparation. Delegates spent time researching their assigned countries and issues for weeks beforehand.
“We have a really great leadership team,” Bierbaum states. “The kids were very active, they met every single Monday before school and off-campus on days we didn’t have school.”
Junior Bella Gilbert was one of the NCWHS Delegates to attend the ISU-hosted summit. This is her first year in the club.
“My favorite part of the summit was working with other delegates from other schools and working together to find a resolution to our problem,” Gilbert states. She represented Brazil and was a part of finding a solution to Environmental Policies.
The NCWHS Model UN Club looks forward to attending more local summits, and hopes to host their own in the spring semester.
