L.A. Clippers owner in hot water over racist remarks
Donald Sterling, the owner of the Los Angeles has caused quite a controversy after saying racist remarks to his girlfriend during a phone call.
TMZ released the recording on Saturday, April 26th. In the 9 minute recording, Donald Sterling went on a racist rant to his then mistress V. Stiviano. The rant started from his mistress posting a picture with NBA hall of famer Magic Johnson on her Instagram account. In the call, Sterling told her that he can’t bring any black people to the game. He also told her that she had to delete any photos on her Instagram that included black people.
One of the most ironic things about this situation is that Sterling’s mistress is half African-American and half Mexican.
Many people are speaking their minds about the situation. President Barack Obama said, “When ignorant folks want to advertise their ignorance, you don’t really have to do anything, you just let them talk. That’s what happened here…I think that we just have to be clear and steady in denouncing it, teaching our children differently, but also remaining hopeful that part of why statements like this stand out some much is because there has been this shift in how we view ourselves.”
NBA legend Michael Jordan said, “As an owner, I’m obviously disgusted that a fellow team owner could hold such sickening and offensive views,” Jordan said. “As a former player, I’m completely outraged. There is no room in the NBA—or anywhere else—for the kind of racism and hatred that Mr. Sterling allegedly expressed.”
Members of the Clippers held a silent protest by wearing their practice shirts inside out to hide the logo during a practice on Monday.
On Tuesday April, 29th NBA commissioner Adam Silver barred Sterling from the NBA for life as well as a 2.5 million dollar fine. The punishment is the most the league can do. The NBA is going to urge Sterling to sell the team.
