Normal West High School is gearing up for the debut of Norm L. West III, the new and improved school mascot.
As the school says its farewell to its previous mascot, who was a veteran that served the school community for decades, we are proud to welcome in a better version of him.
The previous mascot has been through various renditions since the 1996 school year. He has seen the school through its transitions in colors, from orange and black to the more recent silver and black. He has lived through many football games, assemblies, and other school activities, as well.
The decision to invest in a new mascot was not made lightly. The aging costume was showing signs of wear and tear. Pieces of his plastic whiskers have begun falling out, his foot pads are thinning, and many other structural issues have led to the decision to consider a fresh start for Norm.
Generosity poured in from the Senior Classes of 2023 and 2024. As they raised enough money to cover the extensive cost of a brand new mascot. The school is greatly appreciative of this gift that will serve the school community for years to come.
The new mascot is being crafted by Olympus Group-Custom Printing & Mascot Costumes, a company based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Designed as a homage to the second rendition of Norm L. West, the new costume incorporates the familiar features of his predecessor, Norm L. West II.
Art teacher, Mr. Ali Akyuz played an important role, providing detailed photographs of the second mascot to ensure the new design remains faithful to its prior.
While the mascot stays true to his classic design, it’s also equipped to withstand the wear and tear of regular use. Partnering with Olympus Designs has been a wise financial investment for Normal West. This is because if the mascot were to be damaged or get dirty, it can be sent back to Olympus Designs to be repaired. This will ensure that the mascot will last for many years to come.
As Normal West eagerly awaits the arrival of Norm L. West III, plans for the mascot’s grand debut are already underway.
In fact in December 2023 or early January 2024, the mascot is planned to make his first appearance at games, assemblies, the Hauntcert, and various other special events.
