Celebrities and people in any position of power have been stating their political opinions publicly for years, but recently due to controversies surrounding Donald Trump, it has become a trend. Many celebrities have been speaking out against him or his ideas.
Twitter seems to be the main outlet for these thoughts. John Legend took it up a step by replying to Trump’s son, “I think they were protesting your racist father. This isn’t complicated,” wrote Legend, referring to clash between Trump supporters and protesters in Chicago.
These comments about Trump have been happening before he was even elected. Celebrities such as Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth believed it was all a publicity stunt, as it “couldn’t be real,” according to Lawrence
When the idea of the ban on transgender soldiers was announced, celebrities talked about it. Ellen DeGeneres tweeted, “We should be grateful to the people who wish to serve, not turn our backs on them. Banning transgender people is hurtful, baseless and wrong.”
DeGeneres ended up giving a transgender couple that serves in the military $25,000 for financial stability, in case they lose their jobs. This couple was planning to adopt a child when the ban was announced, halting their plans.
More recently, Eminem performed a four minute freestyle called “The Storm”, bashing Trump. In this song he criticized him for distracting Americans from gun reform ideas in Nevada by shaming NFL players via Twitter.
Eminem went on to say, “Tiki torches in hand for the soldier that’s black, and comes home from Iraq, and is still told to go back to Africa” about DACA and immigration laws
Eminem closed off the freestyle by saying, “Any fan of mine who’s a supporter of his, I’m drawing in the sand a line — you either for or against.”
Many other artists have been praising him on twitter for speaking his mind. Singer gnash tweeted, “We’re really lucky we live in a world where Eminem exists.”
