On October 7th the West cross country team participated in a canned food drive that would benefit those within the community and those affected by the recent hurricanes.
When asked what made Megan Starkey, she said, “I saw the need for the people affected through the news and social media.”
She then came up with the idea to split the cross country into three teams for a friendly competition to see who could donate the most.
On Saturday October 7th, the team gathered for morning practice at the school while bringing in their donations to the south gym to count the grand total collected.
Senior, Grace Magnuson said, “helping those in needs warms my heart.”
Sophomore Olivia Bloyd said, “I wanted to support the cause and people that are in need.”
A few days later the donations were taken to Midwest Food Bank and the total weight for the whole team’s donations was 701 pounds.
Starkey was asked if she was surprised by the amount collected and she said, “The weight surprised me the most. With 60 kids on the team it shows how much of a difference we can make.”
The items that were collected were just recently shipped out to those in need of the donations.
